Robert  J.  Wichert
January 1, 1940 -  November 20, 2020

Robert Joseph Wichert, Age 80, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. Bob was born at 3:30 AM on January 1, 1940 making him the 1st baby born in Omaha that year. He was the 3rd child of Alfred and Adelaide (Schlueter) Wichert who preceded him in death. He is survived by brother, Tom (Collette) of Glen Rock, PA. and is preceded in death by sisters, Marian (Joe) DeLuca and Marguerite (Bill) Wiegand.

He went to St. Joseph's Grade and High School. He attended trade school to be a plumber and was a member of Plumbers Local Union 16 for almost 60 years. He was fondly known as "Huggy Bear". He also worked for the City of Omaha Building Maintenance Department.

He met the love of his life, Judy Remar, in 1959 at her Uncle Ernie's grocery store. They were married on June 10, 1961 at St. Rose Church. Together they raised 5 children: Tom, Loretta (Larry) Houlton, Mike (Jeri), Jane (Evan) Gurney, and Paula (Jim) Sullivan. Tom passed away on June 7, 1989. They are blessed with 10 grandchildren: John Houlton, Brooke and Thomas Wichert, Anna (Geoff) Siebrandt, Lisa and Mary Gurney, Nicole, Sara, Joseph, and Laura Sullivan. 2 great-granddaughters: Kloe and Molly Siebrandt.

They are members of St. Thomas More Church where they met many life long friends. He volunteered countless hours there. He was an usher at Mass, ran the Bazaar, served as a member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society and Men's Club, coached girls' softball and anything else that was needed. He also helped build the Grover Little League Baseball Fields and coached there too. He played softball for the STM Red Team.

He enjoyed camping, casinos, and traveling, especially to Estes Park. He loved watching Husker football and his New York Yankees play ball.

He was loved and respected by everyone. Bob had a heart of gold and was happy to help lots of people in his life. He could fix anything and worked hard to provide for his family. He was proud to be able to send all five kids to Catholic schools. His Catholic faith was very important to him and he enjoyed going to daily Mass and weekly Holy Hour with Judy.

In 2012, he started his battle with Dementia. It was very hard on him to lose his ability to communicate. He and Judy sold their house of 49 years in February of 2019 and moved into Assisted Living at Immanuel Village. They were happy that their oldest grandson, John, bought the house. In August of 2020, Bob moved to Memory Care at Via Christe. He was diagnosed with end stage renal failure on November 9, 2020. The family provided in home hospice so he could be surrounded by Judy and the family they created. Along with his family, he is survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family would like to thank Via Christe Memory Care Unit for their loving care during the last few months of his life and the VNA Hospice Team for their compassion and guidance the last days of his life.
