Dick "Apple" Rubek, 71
Dick was born and raised in South Omaha. Dick was very proud of his Bohunk roots he seeded around Brown Park. Dick has numerous life long friends he gained along his journey in South O.
Dick’s love for vehicles started at a very young age, in fact he began driving at age 11. Dick enjoyed dealing in cars and trucks, especially with his son. In his 20’s he gained a love for motorcycles, this passion brought many adventures and new friends into his life.
In 1982, Dick survived a tragic diving accident that resulted in him becoming a quadriplegic. Although devastating, this brought our family closer. With undying love from his wife Liz, his children, and the great doctors he was able to take advantage of a new lease on life. While enduring 13 years of rehab, he used his passion for cars to provide for his family through buying and selling them.
Dick began working for the City of Omaha in 1995, he remained there for 29 years. Dick held the position of Dispatcher. Dick’s passion for his Union Local 251 and his job showed as he rarely missed work and worked double shifts through winter to ensure the safety of his guys and the public. He was a very proud Union man, he served his Local 251 as an Executive Board member and Chief Union Steward.
Preceded in death by his mother Delores, father Don, stepfather Lewis, and brothers: Donny and Russell, and best friend Jerry Deane.
