Robert Francis Gillen, 72

Bob grew up in the home of his grandparents, James and Martha (O’Leary) Gillen, in South Omaha. He attended St. Agnes Grade School, was a graduate of Omaha South High School in 1964 and Omaha University in 1970. Bob subsequently taught Social Studies and coached many sports for the Bellevue Public School System for 31 years. After his retirement, he continued to enjoy interacting with students as a substitute teacher for many years. He enjoyed gardening, music, following his favorite sports and spending time with his family.

Bob was predeceased by his mother Genevieve Hawkins. He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn of 51 years; sons Sean (Erin), Ryan (Jennifer) and Andrew (Katie); grandchildren Griffin and Harper; many beloved siblings and their families; extended family members and many dear friends.

The family would like to especially thank Dr. Laxmi Buddharaju (Dr. Budd) and the many medical and support teams from the Bellevue Emergency Squad, UNMC, and Hillcrest Health Care for their professional treatment and compassionate care of Bob during his extended illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be sent to Marilyn Gillen for a Bellevue East High School scholarship in Bob’s name or to Doctors without Borders at 40 Rector Street, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10006.
