Born to the late William and Helen Shimkus on April 18, 1928, in Omaha, NE. Rita died peacefully in her sleep, after and extended battle with COPD.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 62years, Joseph, her daughter Linda Cuyler and son Robert, all of Omaha
Rita's career began in housewares at the Brandeis department store in downtown Omaha. She later went to work as a switchboard operator at Refinite. After a stint as a salad lady at Anthony's Steakhouse, she joined Western Electric where she worked until her retirement from Lucent Technologies in 1993.
Rita will long be remembered for her love of all things Christmas. She designed elaborate ornaments for the holiday she cherished, baked enough cookies to last until the 4th of July, and left her tree up from Thanksgiving till Groundhog Day.
She also loved to cook and read. And among her greatest treasures, she valued the many pets who brought joy into her home and light into her life.
Rita has requested no visitation or services. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
