Charles M. Svajgl, 92
Charles M. Svajgl was born on November 21, 1932 in Omaha to Charles and Bernice (Balaban) Svajgl. He was the oldest of five children. Siblings: Kenneth, Donna, Rosemary and Patricia. He grew up in a south Omaha neighborhood with many relatives, attended Corrigan Grade School and graduated from Omaha South High in 1950.
He met and fell in love with Caroline Lasance, a girl with long dark hair who caught the bus near his family home. Together, they enjoyed picnicking and roasting hotdogs and smores on an open fire. They eloped and were married in Fremont, Nebraska on October 6, 1951.
Charles and Carol have four children; Charles, Christine, Colleen, and Carrie. Charlie built the home they grow up in off 36th & Harrison Street in Omaha, Nebraska. Through the years, Charlie enjoyed remodeling their different family homes. He was always proud of his work and spent many hours outside enjoying the well-manicured yard and nature’s creatures, being able to identify the many different species of birds.
Charlie enjoyed hunting, boating and traveling. The family took many vacations to western Nebraska and Colorado. Disney Land and Expo ‘67 were both great family adventures. After the kids were grown Charlie and Carol traveled the United States with family and dear friends, and had the opportunity to travel multiple times to England and Europe to see Carol’s family and tour the continent.
Charles worked multiple different jobs in his lifetime including driving a truck for his uncle Bandy, running the family gas station at 36th & Harrison, and working for Continental Can Company. He ended his working career as a plumber and was a member of Plumbers Local 16.
In retirement he took up woodworking, donating his hand-made toys to the Stephen Center. He made special items for each of his family members that are cherished by all.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Bernice, sister Patricia, brother Kenneth, and his beloved son Charles Terrance Svajgl.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years Carol; children, Chris and Bill Stone, Colleen and Ron Karmazin, and Carrie Rhine; daughter-in-law Patty,; eight grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and two great-great-granddaughters; his two sisters, Donna Docekal and Rosemary Shimonek; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family has asked donations be made to Stephen Center, 2723 Q Street, Omaha, NE 68107.
The Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, May 24, 2025, 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church - Parish Center, 508 W Angus Road, Gretna, NE 68028
